Alex Podger is a visual theatre director, designer and fire artist with a proclivity for pyrotechnics, and has created large scale outdoor theatrical works across Australia and in Europe.
He is the artistic director of Woodford Folk Festival’s flagship Closing Ceremony ‘Fire Event’ - a large scale outdoor spectacle theatre work performed to an audience of twenty thousand spectators, featuring large scale images, puppets, hundreds of performers, elaborate firework sculptures and a twelve metre bonfire image, created by a dedicated team of national and international artists.
Alex has produced & directed a number of other spectacle theatre and circus productions on lakes, ponds & bays, in botanic gardens & city centres, with a unique blend of firework effects, fire, puppets and large images, and is also a licensed pyrotechnician.
Alex is the director and designer of The Gremlins - a touring outdoor site-specific clown show about a clan of mischievous creatures trying to fulfil their dream of flying by launching a budget airline. The show took Adelaide Fringe, Cairns Festival and Woodford Folk Festival by storm, with 5 star reviews and sold out shows, and closed in Brisbane after six years, at the historic burnt out Red Hill Skate Arena.
Other projects include the Ogoh Ogoh for Dark Mofo - a Balinese Hindu Ritual where the whole city feed their fears to a demon, before burning it on a giant pyro sculpture in the dead of the Tasmanian winter.
Alex also works as a designer and prop maker for film projects.
